Making Glue at Home

I have been thinking about a collage project but concerned not everyone may have glue at home. No problem.

Believe it or not before the fancy glue sticks, little squeezy bottles and glitter folks made their own glue and paste. The best news is it's really easy and you probably have the ingredients in your cupboard.

Here are two recipes. Both dry clear and matte, stick well and clean up easily. The glue has more of an immediate stick factor. The paste wrinkles paper when applied but dries flat and works better for papier mache.

Homemade Paste

Mix equal parts water and flour in small pot over medium heat. Stir until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool overnight. Keep in mind it will thicken as it cools. Store in covered container.

Homemade Glue

  • 1.5 cup water divided

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup

  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Mix cornstarch in 3/4 cup water in small bowl and set aside. Mix 3/4 cup water, corn syrup and vinegar in small pot over medium heat until boiling. Add cornstarch mixture and stir until boiling. Boil 1 minute. Let cool and sit overnight. Store in covered container.

Give it a try! Let me know what you think and be on the look out for some collage projects.

Be well,

Ms. Miranda
